The acronym combines the founder's initials with Elmtaryd, the family farm, and Agunnaryd, the village where Kamprad grew up. The company added furniture to its catalog in 1948 and developed the flat-pack format starting in 1956 with the L-VET table.
The catalog includes long-running pieces such as the Billy bookcase, the Poäng armchair, the Llippan sofa and the Lack table, designed in collaboration with Niels Gammelgaard, Tord Björklund, Noboru Nakamura and the IKEA of Sweden in-house team in Älmhult. The company became the world's largest furniture seller in 2008 and operates stores in more than 50 countries.
