The Arco lamp is an iconic piece of mid-century modern design, created in 1962 by Italian designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The lamp is characterized by its sleek, curved design and its long, thin arm that extends outwards from a marble base. The arm is adjustable, allowing the lamp to be used for a variety of lighting needs, and the shade can be rotated as well. The Arco lamp has become a classic of modern design and is often used in homes, offices, and other settings where a statement piece of lighting is desired.
Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) and Piergiacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) were Italian designers known for their innovative and playful approach to industrial design. They worked together as a team for over 20 years, creating a wide range of products, from furniture and lighting to household objects and electronics.
Achille and Piergiacomo were born into a family of renowned architects and designers and were trained in architecture themselves. They began their collaboration in the 1940s, working on projects for major Italian design companies such as Flos and Alessi.
Their designs were characterized by a sense of humor and a deep understanding of the potential of everyday objects. They were known for their ability to combine simplicity with elegance, creating products that were both functional and visually striking.
Some of their most notable designs include the Arco lamp, the Mezzadro stool, and the Sella stool. Their work has been featured in numerous museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Achille and Piergiacomo received numerous awards throughout their careers, including the Compasso d'Oro award, one of the most prestigious design awards in the world. Their legacy continues to inspire designers today, and their work is celebrated for its timeless appeal and enduring influence on the field of industrial design.
Flos
Flos is an Italian lighting manufacturer founded in 1962 by Dino Gavina, Cesare Cassina and Arturo Eisenkeil, initially in Merano and then relocated to Bovezzo, near Brescia, in 1964. The brand built its identity around the work of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, who experimented with the cocoon spray technique to develop the Taraxacum, Viscontea and Gatto lamps.
The collection grew through long-term collaborations with Tobia Scarpa, Marcel Wanders, Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic and the Bouroullec brothers. Iconic pieces include the Arco floor lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1962), the Toio (1962) and the IC Lights series by Michael Anastassiades.
The 3D Model Unity catalog of Flos includes high-precision NURBS models built for Rhinoceros 3D, with native rendering profiles for V-Ray, KeyShot and Corona, suitable for residential and contract lighting projects.
