Product Details

The Falkland lamp was born during a period of interest in Japanese culture, to which Munari felt a strong affinity. In the 1960s, the designer often traveled to Japan, fascinated by the Zen spirit, asymmetry, design, and packaging of Japanese tradition. It was precisely during those same years that the Danish company turned to Munari for the design of the lamp. It was conceived to meet important requirements, including good quality of light, functionality, as well as aesthetics and decorative component. Munari wanted to create a living room lamp with a limited cost, easy to assemble, of large volume when in use, and of very small volume when in storage. A lamp, in short, that was practical, resistant, and washable. There were few lamps on the market with almost all these features, perhaps the only ones were Japanese. However, the data analysis showed that these lamps, made of paper, were fragile, absorbed a lot of light, yellowed, and were not washable. The price was relatively low originally, but when they arrived in Europe, they became too expensive. Munari focused, therefore, on the search for a material that did not yellow, let the light through, and was cheap. He went to the knitting industries where elastic knit tubes were produced, with the intention of experimenting with the shapes that could derive from modifying them and to study the behavior of filanca placed next to a light source.
